HIV（ヒト免疫不全ウイルス）はエイズ（後天性免疫不全症候群）の原因となり、感染症に対抗する免疫の働きを低下させます。
- 性的接触による感染
- 治療で改善できるが、完治はしない
- 慢性: 数年または生涯に及ぶ
- 医療診断が必要
- 臨床検査や画像診断が必ず必要
このウイルスは、感染した血液や精液、または膣液との接触を通じて広がります。
HIV 感染後、数週間以内に発熱、咽頭痛、倦怠感などインフルエンザのような症状が出ます。その後、多くの場合、エイズへと進行するまで症状は現れません。。エイズの症状には、体重減少、発熱、寝汗、倦怠感など、そして頻繁に感染症を起こすようになります（日和見感染症）。
エイズは治癒しませんが、抗レトロウイルス薬（ARV）による治療法を厳正に遵守することにより、疾病の進行を劇的に抑制し、さらに二次感染や合併症を予防できます。
